Symposium Objective

In a rapidly evolving world shaped by technological innovation, global interconnectedness, and shifting cultural paradigms, the humanities remain vital to understanding and shaping the human experience. Humanities disciplines are undergoing dynamic transformations —adapting, innovating, and offering fresh perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of our time. Fields such as literature, philosophy, cultural studies, the arts, and social theory also cultivate essential skills: critical thinking, ethical reasoning, intercultural understanding, creativity, and civic engagement. These are not auxiliary competencies —they are foundational to building resilient, thoughtful, and inclusive societies.

This symposium invites scholars, educators, artists, and students to explore the evolution of the humanities in the UAE. We seek to highlight innovative practices, interdisciplinary collaborations, and visionary approaches that demonstrate the humanities’ capacity to illuminate, connect, and empower.

Rather than lamenting a perceived decline in the humanities, we wish to focus on what is emerging: new pedagogies, digital tools, creative expressions, and philosophical insights that reaffirm the humanities as a vibrant force for the future.

Participants may submit individual papers to join one of the tentative sessions below or propose a new session.

Symposium Sessions

Session 1

Digital Humanities in Practice – Case Studies across the Disciplines

This session explores the innovative integration of digital tools in humanities research and teaching. We invite case studies that showcase how digital humanities foster interdisciplinary collaboration, enhance scholarly inquiry, and open new avenues for creativity and engagement. From text mining to 3D modeling, we welcome examples that demonstrate how technology enriches traditional methods and empowers educators, students, and researchers to explore the humanities in transformative ways.

Session 2

The Place of Reading and Critical Thinking in Academia and Education

This session challenges us to rethink the place of technology in reading and critical thinking in an age that rarely pauses. Technology promises insight, information, and endless reading materials and often delivers them, yet it can also erode the focus and curiosity on which the humanities depend. The next step forward in cultivating reading and critical thinking among students and researchers may not be simply using more technology but rather learning when and how to use it wisely. We invite proposals that explore innovative uses of technology or intentional practices of disconnection that foster sustained attention and support deep reading and critical thinking.

Session 3

Reclaiming Wisdom: The Role of Philosophy in the Age of AI

Philosophy remains a vital compass in navigating the complexities of our technologically driven world. This session highlights the enduring relevance of philosophical inquiry in helping us understand what it means to be human, to reason ethically, and to engage with the world thoughtfully. We invite contributions that demonstrate how philosophy can illuminate the path forward, offering wisdom and clarity in an age of AI and rapid technological change.

Session 4

Round Table: Art is Dead: Long Live the Artist — Creativity and Artificial Intelligence

This round table celebrates the resilience and adaptability of artists in the face of technological evolution. From photography to AI-generated imagery, artists have continually embraced new tools to expand the boundaries of creative expression. Join us for a vibrant discussion on how contemporary artists are reimagining their craft, proving that creativity is not only alive but thriving in the digital age. We explore how art continues to inspire, challenge, and connect us in profound ways.

Session 5

Humanities Initiatives in the UAE — Cultural Investment and National Development

This panel invites representatives from cultural institutions, governmental bodies, and academic organizations across the UAE to share their experiences in promoting the humanities as a vital force for social, cultural, and economic development. The session will explore how investment in culture, the arts, and humanities-based education has contributed to the UAE’s evolving identity, fostered intercultural dialogue, and supported national goals such as innovation, sustainability, and community cohesion. The panel will highlight successful projects, collaborations, and policy frameworks that have advanced the humanities in the UAE, offering insights into the strategic value of cultural development in the region.
