The Middle East Summit: Social Inclusion of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Conference, Workshop, and Poster Competition is a joint initiative between the School of Education at the American University in Dubai (AUD) and the Faculty of Education at the British University in Dubai (BUID). This impactful event will take place from November 20-22, 2024, across both campuses, representing a strong commitment to advancing inclusive practices throughout the region and beyond.
Supported by the International Journal of Developmental Disabilities, a leading publication from Taylor and Francis, the three-day conference will address the critical challenges and opportunities related to fostering social inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities. The event will focus on key sectors such as education, employment, and community life in the Middle East.
A special highlight of the conference is the launch of the special issue, “Social Inclusion of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities in the Middle East,” co-edited by Prof. Eman Gaad and Prof. Nadera Alborno, and published by the International Journal of Developmental Disabilities. The featured papers from this issue will be presented throughout the conference.
With keynote presentations by global experts, interactive workshops, and a poster competition showcasing groundbreaking research, this event offers a valuable platform for educators, practitioners, and advocates to share innovative ideas and develop actionable strategies to advance social inclusion.

Supporting Students in Successfully Navigating the Transition from High School to College
Description:
For millions of students with disabilities worldwide, the pursuit of higher education remains an aspirational goal. Research has shown that well-structured transition plans to adulthood can often include higher education as a feasible option.
This workshop is designed to facilitate the integration of students with autism into higher education, thereby creating a bridge for students with disabilities to continue formal education in inclusive post-secondary environments. The opportunity to attend college provides a foundation for many of these individuals to enhance their self-esteem, build confidence, and demonstrate their capacity to succeed alongside their peers in higher education.
Participants will engage with strategies focused on selecting an appropriate college, addressing both academic and social expectations, and cultivating effective self-advocacy skills. This workshop will be particularly beneficial to individuals with disabilities, as well as professors, disability support staff, and others who seek to enhance their understanding of and ability to support the growing population of students on the autism spectrum in higher education.

Participants will leave with practical, effective strategies that can be readily implemented to foster the inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education, while ensuring that the classroom environment is accessible to all. The presenters will also share insights from their recent publication and propose several strategies, along with a model that institutions may consider adopting to enhance accessibility.
